I haven't had a chance to post a blog on here in quite a while due to being overwhelmed with business projects. It's very difficult to keep up a blog even when you don't have anything going on. For a while I'm back at it again...
Today my wife and I started putting up our Christmas decorations. We have two small trees on each side of the front door that have colored over-sized lights on them now. We still have a long ways to go as far as decorating is concerned. It started to rain and was cold so we didn't do anything else outside and the entire inside is still left to do. We have new furniture this year along with a new layout so we are going to have to completely re-think our decorations. Whenever we get more of it done I'll post some pictures in a future blog entry.

It's Been A While
It's been a few weeks since my last post due in part to a case of Internet burnout. Now I'm recovered and back at it again. My new regional magazine East Central Ohio Magazine comes out in October so I've been looking for sales help. I have an interview with a guy this coming week who has a lot of experience so I'm hoping it works out. Surprisingly I haven't had much interest...this is surprising because I'm advertising these jobs in my hometown where unemployment is very high.
I've decided in the past week to do most of the sales myself. The October issue will have an Autumn/Halloween theme and will include stories about local job losses and what officials are doing to turn things around as well as supplement on November election candidates. I'll be sending out the first issue free of charge to anyone who requests it along with all of the area libraries. I'm pretty excited about this project and hope people are receptive to it. It will give them another option for local information and I think that is much needed.

The Stress of IT
I just had a project installing a network for an organization over in Westerville that contained both a wireless and hard-wired component. They have a small but growing non-profit organization that works to bring jobs into Ohio and to promote one of Ohio's only growing manufacturing segment, so I wanted to do a good job on their IT project because I think what they're doing is great.
After being in IT for almost 11 years now (wow...that's hard to believe) I know better than to think everything is going to go smoothly on any project. Even very knowledgeable and experienced people sometimes find themselves beating their heads against brick walls thanks to computers and software. This project over in Westerville has one rather large issue that continues to drive me nuts even as I'm writing this. Here's the situation...
I do all of the technical purchasing for this company and bought all of the PC workstations, peripherals, printers, switches/routers, and general infrastructure. For this project I purchased a 2.4 GhZ Linksys wireless router with VPN capabilities. It took me a day or two but I have their wireless network up and running along with surprisingly fast DSL broadband (business class/always on via SBC/AT&T). My problem is the server I purchased from DELL. It's the PowerEdge 2900 and to save money we set up a Windows XP based network in the office and that is where the problem comes in. DELL, being the pain in the ass they are, doesn't support Windows XP (my theory on this is that they don't support it because it only allows them a small profit margin when resold). The only server operating systems they support are the $5,000+ server/multi-client license network systems that we don't need in an office with less than 10 people that is on a very limited, grant funded budget.
To install Windows XP I had to do some research online then download all of the hardware drivers for the server's hard disks then install them from a floppy (I hadn't used a floppy prior to this week in may be six months). So far so good this morning...the XP install seems to be taking. I'm sitting here at their office waiting for it to go through each setup step. I've been two weeks working on this project and all but two days of those two weeks was spent working on this server issue.
Lesson learned....Don't buy a DELL server for a small office network! Just buy a powerful PC and set it up to act as a server...it will be easier and will work just as well for less than 20 people. Big servers are for big organizations (or people who have money to waste on powerful network operating systems with lots of unnecessary "bells and whistles").
So the next time you're computer is driving you crazy....keep in mind that even after 11 years of working with computers almost daily I run into fiasco's that drive me crazy also. Things change so quickly it's a battle keeping up on all of the new practices and standards of every company.

New Albany
Yet again the powers that be in Coshocton have prevented me from getting involved there so I'm giving up on that. I'm going to do what I do best and just try to make things more entertaining for people who are there through my websites.
Now I'm going to focus most of my civic efforts towards New Albany. I'm going to have to work my way in though because there is a lot of active talent in this area already. Should be fun and won't require nearly the commuting expense anything in Coshocton would have. I might join a zoning committee first....we're anti-Wal-Mart in this area!

Business Indecesion 2007
Anymore it seems like I get an itch to change my business every year and this year's time has arrived. I'm dropping fundraising and several other services I offered and I'm moving into website development full-time focusing on municipal and community related sites. Fundraising became too time consuming for a one man operation to handle while still bringing in sufficient revenues. I also didn't like doing it because groups were constantly having to back out of deals when funding fell through resulting in significant amounts of lost revenue.
Now, I'm doing something I like that has been making money for me the past two years. I'm also doing band websites and managing myspace pages for people in addition to my website work with communities. If you know anyone with a small organization in need of website help send them to me. I use open-source software and would rank myself at nearly expert level with most open source Content Management Systems.
Lastly, good news. I got an interview for the Director of Regional Planning job in Coshocton County but don't think I landed it. I'm just happy they took the time to interview me. It's on step further than I've ever made it in the past around there.

My Weekend
My wife was off of work both Saturday and Sunday, which is rare when you're an ER Nurse, so we had a 2 day weekend like regular people. It was great to have nice weather on a weekend when both of us were off to enjoy it.
Saturday we slept in and then went up to Mansfield to go through the old Ohio State Reformatory with a few of my friends and had a great time. We didn't see any ghosts by the way. Check out their website if you've never been there before. They've done a lot of things to refurbish the building. They have a gift shop in one section and what they've been able to do with it is impressive...
http://www.mrps.org/
Sunday we slept in again and then headed to Hoggy's for dinner. Sunday is "cheat day" as far as our workout/diet plan goes so we get to indulge in what everyone else usually eats all the time. It's a nice change from high protein healthy stuff. After that we went over to Easton so I could buy some cologne and to walk around in the nice warm weather.
On the way home from Easton we went through the Starbucks drive-thru and then did a little bit of yard work. We're planning a patio out back and also starting a project to build a small "wall" around the side of our front yard flower bed using natural stone.
Overall it was a great weekend.

My Message
Today MyCoshocton.com went live, which is the video and reader contributed content section of my website EastCentralOhio.com. I started my site initially to prove a point and that point is that any individual can make a difference in their community whether those in charge let them or not. The site is enormous and it's written in a programming language that I didn't know the first thing about when I started putting it together. I taught myself how to operate the entire thing while adding my own content. I've had a few new sign-ups recently but it's still not to where I had hoped it would be at this time. I'm still plugging away and I guarantee that eventually it will reach the level I'm picturing in my head.
You can also improve your community by taking steps on your own. You don't need anybody else to help you initially and once people see that you're serious about making a difference help will "come out of the woodwork". I've met several very intelligent and motivated people with goals very similar to mine when it comes to the Coshocton area.
Don't be afraid to take steps on your own. If you're determined, willing to work at things, and have patience things will work out in the end.

Stewart Field Project
I found out after further research yesterday that the Coshocton Board of Education approved the Stewart Field rehab groups request to proceed with trying to upgrade the facility. I suppose I should have done more research on this before writing my previous post and not been so aggressive towards leadership. This was a good decision by the board and I think it's great that this group would take on a project of this magnitude. The facility has needed upgrades for at least 15 years now.
I never played football or soccer but I've always been a fan and have attended many events at Stewart Field. It's a facility seen by many out-of-town visitors attending events and the nicer it is the better it will reflect on the community as a whole.
I'm thinking about offering my services as a fundraiser to this group. I think this is an excellent project.

Community Improvement
I'm not a happy camper this morning because I made the mistake of checking the Coshocton Tribune forum postings while eating breakfast. I shouldn't even log onto that site because a lot of the people who post get me worked up and into a bad mood quickly. I'm a progressive guy and I'm all about progress. I've known for a while that a private group of parents were going to attempt to raise funds to install artificial turf at Coshocton's football stadium. I'm all for this project because it improves a community and a school district facility in an area where most people are currently against spending money on anything. You have to make people want to move somewhere and right now I see no reasons to move into the city of Coshocton. There just isn't anything special about it.
Now back to the turf issue... I received a few complaints from my posting on the Tribune forums about how I was planning to support this project so I've decided to address them here...
Outside money will look bad - Well folks since there are no jobs in Coshocton most of Coshocton High School's alumni now live somewhere else. I plan to support this project when it proceeds and since I lived in Coshocton for 22 years and graduated from the school district It makes sense that I'd want to support a project related to improving the district. A lot of public school districts have alumni networks just like colleges that they use to solicit funds for projects such as this turf install.
It will look bad to the parents at Washington because the school is closing - If you want your schools to stay opened you vote FOR levies. When the community votes no the parents who are willing to put their own money behind their kids (the parents who voted for the levy) should be able to raise money for a privately funded project to improve the facilities their kid uses. When schools are closing and budget cuts are being made one thing is for certain...there will be no facility improvements funded by the district anytime soon so the only way this stuff is going to get done is if private groups take it on. In all honesty, I don't care how this project will look to parents at Washington. They've gotta understand that these are two completely unrelated things. People aren't going to donate money to support operations for the entire community's school system after an election indicated the majority of citizens don't value education but they will spend money to directly impact the facilities their kid uses because they want what is best for their kid even though the community doesn't.
I'm tired of all the whining and crying about how things will look and what if this/what if that that goes on in Coshocton. You don't lead by worrying about who gets upset and how things look..you lead by making things happen and by improving the community. If I were in Coshocton right now I would be an independent candidate for Mayor. There is just no leadership at all in that city right now. The County is way ahead of the city at this point in time. You can't worry about upsetting a minority of people and then axe a project that is a "no-brainer" improvement of the community's amenities.

Hail Storm Lastnight
We had a pretty significant hail storm here in New Albany last night that left my yard and driveway covered in marble and pea sized hail. No damage fortunately but it was cool to watch. We had 3 hail storms last summer and a tornado touched down across the street in Upper Albany West...hopefully this summer is not as bad as last year storm-wise. We did luck out last year and had no damage though some of our nearby neighbors weren't as fortunate...especially over in Upper Albany.
I haven't heard anything back about the job I applied for in Coshocton. This is it though as far as trying to help out by getting directly involved in things back there go. I took the time yesterday to go through my old job application records and I have applied for 26 different jobs back there over the past two years (several without pay) and haven't received any feedback what-so-ever, not even a "we're sorry we filled the position" note. I'm not a cocky or arrogant person but I am confident in myself and I think I'm more talented than the majority of the people running things back there. They just will not, for whatever reason, give me a chance.
I had to move to Columbus because I was given a chance here when I wasn't in Coshocton and until they understand that people with talent go where they are wanted the Coshocton community will continue to bleed young people. I try the best I can from a distance to make a difference in Coshocton. If nothing comes of this job I'm turning my attention elsewhere because I have no doubt someone can make use of my excellent skills, knowledge, and "can do" attitude. If Coshocton needs me for anything then they can come to me because I'm done going to them.

What Happened To The Weather??
Good grief it's only 36 degrees right now and my driveway is dusted with snow....just yesterday it was 81 degrees and I was wearing shorts...
Man I hope this "reminder of winter" doesn't last long. I'm ready for heat.

New Fitness Plan
I'm trying out a new fitness plan as of yesterday in an attempt to both improve my muscle definition and add a little bit more mass. The plan has two components...
1. The Meal Plan - Six Meals/Day
2. The Workout Plan
The Preacher Curl - 140lbs - 3 sets of 8 reps (sometimes I'm try to pyramid up on this)
The Hammer Curl - 2 sets, 8 reps with the 35lb dumbbells, 1 set of 8 reps with the 40lb dumbbells
Seated Leg Lifts - 3 sets, 8 reps 215lbs.
Seated Leg Curls - 3 sets, 8 repgs 175 lbs.
Bench press is probably my worst lift...I've never been a big fan of it.
I'll make blog entries every now and then noting my progress.
Tom
1. The Meal Plan - Six Meals/Day

Washed The Car & Relaxed Today!
I washed my car today complete inside and out for the first time in about 5 months. It's looking good and I'll add some pictures when I have a chance. I also helped my brother move an entertainment center from his old apartment to his new apartment and met Allison for lunch (Chipotle - Westerville). It was a pretty relaxing day overall. Even moving the entertainment center went smoothly. It's nice again outside this evening and I hate to think about going back into work tomorrow. I hope I hear back about one of the jobs I've appied for soon.

Coshocton County Water System
I was re-reading the economic development plan for Coshocton County today and noticed the plan for a county-wide water system. I have been saying that the City of Coshocton should be the regional water authority for a while now but after reading the plan as it was in the economic development plan I changed my mind.
What they are proposing is a county-wide system operated by the county using all of the water systems currently in place. I had originally thought they would only be buying water at bulk rates from the city of Coshocton but the plan says they will be buying it from Coshocton, Warsaw, West Lafayette and other sources as is convenient and cost effective for different areas of Coshocton County.
This plan makes much more sense than the city being the entire county's water supplier. If the city were running the entire thing they alone would have to handle all system "build outs" and that would be expensive and require a lot of time from city officials. I think the county plan alleviates the city from having all of the responsibility and also makes it more cost effective and less time consuming to expand the water system.
Now that I've read this again I think it's the best idea so I will now support it. I think a lot of Coshocton residents probably don't realize this plan even exists. You can find it on the OSU Extension website for Coshocton County at the following link...

Great Day Today
The weather was great today. It was 77 degrees here in the Columbus area this afternoon and sunny. We met my parents for lunch and then cleaned all of the old plants and other debris out of our flowerbeds. It was good to be outside again, comfortable wearing shorts and a t-shirt. I hope this warm weather is here for the long-term.
I also mailed in my resume for that planning job in Coshocton and found 2 more jobs similar to that in other communities that I'm also applying for. I've been told several times that if I can find a better job I should take it because Polymer Ohio is a here today gone tomorrow kind of thing. I don't plan on staying long enough to find out if it will ever be gone tomorrow. I've been through enough layoffs already in my short career.
Looks like it's supposed to rain tomorrow but that's okay...I'll be back in the office.

Applying For Another Economic Development Job
I've tried and tried to land an economic development or related job in Coshocton County for I don't know how long now and have never recieved an interview. I have an impressive resume (or so I'm told by most business pros) but for some reason this isn't noticed back home. I have had similar problems getting interviews for similar kinds of jobs here in the Columbus area as well. Due to this I've vowed several times never to apply for another one...well I'm at it again.
This time I'm applying for the position of "Director of Regional Planning" in Coshocton County. I meet and exceed all of the requirements. I want to help my hometown revive itself but the powers that be so far have been unwilling to offer me a chance at doing that. This job would mean a small paycut for me but I think it'd be worth it. I know the area, I know a lot of the people, and I think I could really make a difference.
We'll have to wait and see how things fall out. All resume's for this job are supposed to be in by no later than April 11th (the ad says 2006 but I think it's supposed to say 2007). Keep your fingers crossed...hopefully I'll get at least an interview. They really need to better embrace younger people when it comes to public employment in most parts of Southeastern Ohio. So far most places still seem hesitant to do that.

Keep your fingers crossed...hopefully I'll get at least an interview. They really need to better embrace younger people when it comes to public employment in most parts of Southeastern Ohio. So far most places still seem hesitant to do that.

Internet Radio
I learned this week about a decision made by a government committee that could increase the licensing/royalty fees charged to broadcast music over the Internet by almost 100%. This would be devastating to small broadcasters and would also make it impossible for me to start the EastCentralOhio.com radio station I've been working on for two months unless I went with an all talk format. It would definitely put the brakes on any of the sponsorship plans we've been working on.

My name is on the list and I think that if you really believe in something you shouldn't be afraid to put your name on it. I think Internet radio provides a much needed service to people who like niche styles of music and raw/bare bones broadcasting. It gives small organizations and communities the ability to broadcast entertainment small groups without high fees. Unfortunately the music industry is a quagmire that has always seemed to take an "anti-listener/consumer/broadcaster" stance on things. They have the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) entrenched in Washington DC to lobby for them and we really don't have any highly paid lawyers to fight for small Internet broadcasters. The music industry, as with almost anything else in our country, is money first, people later.

Warm Weather!
It's finally warm outside in central Ohio....only to cool back off to the lower 40's for a few days but that's still much improved from the 14 degrees of a few weeks ago. I'm more than ready for summer to get here. I have several projects awaiting me this summer....
Tom
- Build paver patio in the back yard
- Instll underground dog fense
- Coat the driveway with asphalt sealer

Welcome To My Blog!
This blog will contain all kinds of entries related to me. I'll write about my workout program, things going on in everyday life, and anything else I can think of. This blog won't really follow any specific path and will likely jump around between completely unrelated topics. I'm planning to use this as a personal journal and hopefully you'll find it entertaining. My main interests are business, entrepreneurship, technology, online communities, virtual administrative assistance, real estate development, high school football, college football, fitness, tennis, and politics so you can expect many of my blog entries to cover those subjects often.
Thanks for visiting!
